Background of the Study
Substance use among adolescents is a growing public health concern, particularly among pregnant teenagers who may engage in drug or alcohol consumption due to peer pressure. Adolescence is a developmental stage characterized by a heightened need for social belonging, making peer influence a powerful determinant of behavioral choices (Bello & Ibrahim, 2024). In Yobe State, socio-economic challenges, limited access to reproductive health education, and cultural factors further exacerbate the issue of substance use among pregnant adolescents.
Peer influence can be both direct (active encouragement) and indirect (desire to conform to social norms). Studies have shown that pregnant adolescents who associate with substance-using peers are more likely to engage in similar behaviors, putting their pregnancy outcomes at risk (Abubakar et al., 2023). This study aims to assess the extent of peer influence on substance use among pregnant adolescents in Yobe State and explore intervention strategies to mitigate this issue.
Statement of the Problem
Despite increasing awareness of substance abuse risks, many pregnant adolescents in Yobe State continue to engage in substance use due to peer pressure. This behavior contributes to complications such as preterm birth, low birth weight, and developmental issues in newborns. However, little research has been conducted to quantify the impact of peer influence on substance use among pregnant adolescents in the region. Understanding the role of peer relationships in shaping substance use behaviors is crucial for designing effective interventions.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on pregnant adolescents attending antenatal clinics in Yobe State, using surveys and interviews to assess peer influence on substance use. Limitations may include reluctance to disclose substance use behaviors and difficulty in accessing certain populations due to cultural sensitivities.
